Richmond Centre

Derry City, 2010-22

From 2010 to 2022, we were retained by London-based development firm Vixcroft as Architectural Agents responsible for the management and delivery of refurbishment and tenant development works within the Richmond Shopping Centre, Derry. Over this period, we presided over a programme of works which transformed the centre’s retail environment and enhanced its contribution to the city’s commercial and social landscape.

Key projects included:

  • The expansion of the Level 1 mall floor and introduction of Jamm, a new food and beverage offering created through the amalgamation of Units 6-8, increasing lettable space and strengthening the centre’s catering provision.

  • A comprehensive refurbishment of the public mall areas at all levels, including the installation of new floor finishes, ceilings, wall treatments, pilaster features, decorative mouldings, integrated lighting and ventilation systems — elevating the overall aesthetic and customer experience within the centre.

  • The design and introduction of Caffè Nero, marking the first-ever implementation of external seating within Derry city centre under a licensed agreement with DFI Roads. This initiative not only enhanced the café’s offer but also contributed to the activation of public realm spaces, improving vibrancy and dwell time within the immediate area.

  • The design and delivery of Nando’s, featuring an external seating terrace overlooking Shipquay Street. This project further expanded the centre’s food and beverage provision and capitalised on the opportunity to connect the retail environment with the surrounding streetscape, supporting both daytime and evening economies.

  • The introduction of Starbucks at Level 3, continuing the strategy of integrating external seating areas and facilitating extended tenant trade beyond standard centre opening hours. This addition contributed to a more flexible and dynamic commercial offer, reinforcing the centre’s position within the city’s retail hierarchy.
